UK Map Showing Counties

UK map showing counties in constituent countries.

The United Kingdom consists of 4 constituent countries, which are not independent countries, but "countries-within-a-country", autonomous entities that share citizenship, a national parliament, and defense forces. Culturally they are often considered separate nations, for example in European sports leagues. British pounds are the currency used in the constituent countries, though each countries has its own coins and bills with their own countries' symbols and cultural heritage reflected.

Each UK constituent country is divided into counties (though sometimes not referred to as counties, they function at the county level). There are 82 counties in England. Scotland has 33 counties. The country of Wales has 23 counties. And Northern Ireland has just 6.

Here you can find and print out a UK map showing counties in each of the constituent countries of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Some maps also show Ireland (not a part of the UK).

Map Of Major Earthquakes In California

The Loma Pietra major Earthquake in San Francisco, California. The US state of California is extremely earthquake-prone due to its location on San Andreas fault line. This fault line forms the tectonic boundary between The Pacific plate and the North American plate. The land of the Pacific plate is moving to the northwest, while the land of the North American plate is moving to the southwest. The rate of movement is about 33-37 milimeters per year. The compression of this motion causes California's earthquakes.

California has frequent earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater, and those of magnitude 7 or greater typically occur in every decade. Luckily most of these are not located near major population centers.

One of the most recent earthquakes to heavily affect a major population center was the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, which caused heavy damage, 63 deaths, and 3757 injuries, and left thousands more homeless.

Here you can choose a map of major earthquakes in California for further information and detail.

Map Of 21 Missions Of California

21 Spanish Missions dot the California coast. The missions of California were Spanish settlements initiated by Spanish King Charles III and built between between 1769 and 1823. The Spanish had already claimed this land over 200 years earlier, but didn't start settling it until they heard of plans by other powers to settle the area. The missions were a way of laying claim to the area.

Missions were chosen as the first settlements as a way of creating a unified system of commerce for the whole area in advance of the founding of towns and cities. The Spanish decided to create farms, each located 1 day's journey away from the next. This would ensure a contiguous trade route along the coast (they were built near the coast to have easy access to future sea ports). But there were not yet any Spanish settlers in the area, so who would farm the lands? Newly converted Native Americas would farm the lands! That's why missions were chosen--to create an obedient labour force while fulfilling the Catholic mission of conversion at the same time (though I suspect the former was a more important factor!).

The missions were disastrous for the local natives, but helped shaped California into the state it is today.

Here are some map of 21 missions of California. I hope they're useful and informative!

Physical Map Of North Africa

The Sahara Desert in Morocco, North Africa.

One of North Africa's defining topographical features is of course the great Sahara Desert, which occupies a full 90% of the region's land area. Another dominant feature is the Atlas mountains which extend along near the Mediterranean coast through Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Following the Atlas mountain range to the west, it slowly becomes a steppe landscape that leads into the sands of the Sahara.

Of course another dominant feature of North Africa is the Nile River and Delta in Egypt, North Africa's most fertile area and where the majority of Egypt's population lives. Other relatively fertile areas include the Mediterranean coast, oases, and some valleys in the Atlas mountains.

Here I hope you can find a good physical map of North Africa for your further research.

Map Of Climate Of Africa

Map of African climate zones.A lot of people have the impression that Africa is all tropical rainforest or all savanna, but Africa displays a lot of climatic variation. Some regions are indeed tropical, but there are high mountain peaks in Africa that are snow-covered much of the year. The northern part of Africa is mostly desert, dominated by the great Sahara Desert. An strip of semi-desert followed by steppe separates the Sahara from sub-saharan Africa, where rainforests, deciduous forests, and savanna plains dominate. More semidesert and steppe is found in South Africa and east Africa, while the Namibian desert is found in southwest Africa.

Below you can find some map of African cliamte zones for further information.

Climate Map Of Latin America

Machu Picchu, one of the most famous sites in Latin America.Latin America is the part of the Americas where the Romance languages of Spanish and Portugese dominate. This includes South America, Central America, Mexico, and some Caribbean islands like Cuba, Dominican Republican and Puerto Rico. In its original usage, it also included regions where the French language predominates, but that is not part of its current usage.

There is quite a lot of climatic variation in Latin America, ranging from tropical rainforest that are hot and humid year-round, to mountainous regions that can be cold in the winter.

Here you can find a climate map of Latin America, specifically South America, Central America, and Mexico.

Climate Map Of Asia

Bali Indonesia's climate allows for rice farming like this.

Asia covers a mammoth land area of 49,694,700 km², so it naturally has a large amount of geographic and climatic variation. Climate types range from the deserts and sand dunes of Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf area, to subartic and arctic tundra in northern Russia, to the tropical wet climate of Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, southern Vietnam, and much of Thailand. Much of Northeast Asia (including eastern China, Korea, and Japan) has a temperate climate, classified as either humid subtropical (with hot wet summers and cool dry winters) or humid continental (with a large difference between summer temperatures and winter temperatures).

I live in Osaka, Japan which has a humid subtropical climate. It is very hot and humid in the summer, with short mild autumn and spring seasons, and with a cool-cold winter (you need to wear warm clothing, but we see only a few flakes of snow each year, and it melts as soon as it hits the ground). There is also a rainy season from approximately mid-June to mid-July, when the weather is warm and sticky.

Below you can find a climate map of Asia to illustrate the climatic variation of Asia.

Map Of Climate Zones In Europe

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usThe climate of Europe has considerable variation but is mostly temperate. Most of western Europe has a humid oceanic climate; most of Eastern Europe has a humid continental climate. Some areas around the Black Sea and Caspian Sea are semiarid, and much of southern Europe is subtropical with hot dry summers and cool wet winters. Much of Scandinavia, Iceland, and northern Russia is subarctic or arctic tundra.

To illustrate the variation in climate, the city of Seville, Spain has average high temperatures of 36 degrees in July, and 15 degrees in January. To contrast, the city of Helsinki, Finland has an average high temperature of 22 degrees in July and -3 degrees in January. These temperatures are centigrade, not farenheight of course.

Climate Maps United States and Canada

United States Climate zones map.
The United States is a huge country with widely differing climates depending on the region, ranging from polar in Alaska to tropical in Hawaii and southern Florida.

Other climate types include Marine Westcoast climate along the northwest coast of Washington and Oregon states; a Mediterranean climate along the California coast; alpine climate in the high mountainous regions such as the Rockies; a desert climate in parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah; semiarad steppe climate; humid subtropical climate in much of the southern United States; and humid continental climate, with cold wet winters and warmer summers, in much of the northeastern US.

Most of Canada's land area is subartic, with arctic tundra in the far north. The bulk of Canada's population, however, lives in southern Canada near the US border where climate conditions are different. The coastal area of British Columbia has a marine westcoast climate, similar to that of the American northwest; most of southern Canada has a humid continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters; and in southwestern Canada there are mountainous alpine regions and semiarad regions. These semiarad regions can be extremely hot in the summer (I have experienced 42 degrees in the Okanagan region) but quite cold and snowy in winter.

Here they are! Climate maps: United States and Canada.

Climate Regions World Map

Climate regions around the world.Climate is the term used to describe the longterm weather patterns of a particular place, including factors such as temperature, rainfall, and humidity. Depending on a combination of the three factors, different climate classifcations can be given to various regions of the world.

The usual climate classifications include: rain forest, monsoon, tropical savanna, humid subtropical, humid continental, oceanic, Mediterranean, steppe, subarctic, desert, arctic tundra, and polar ice cap.

Climate is heavily affected by latitude (distance from the equator) and elevation, as well as nearby oceans and ocean currents.

For trivia purposes: Did you know that the hottest temperature ever recorded was in El Azizia, Libya in 1922 -- it was 57.8 degrees C (136 degrees F). Higher temperatures have probably occurred, but were not measured and recorded. I have personally experienced 52 degrees C at the border crossing between Israel and Jordan.

The hottest average annual temperature known to man is in Dalol, Ethiopia, at 34.4°C (93.9°F).

Here are some climate regions world map to show you the various climate classifications.

Map Of Al Asad Iraq

Al Asad, Iraq military base and airfield.
Al Asad is the largest coalition military base and airbase in Western Iraq, located in Al Anbar Province. "Al Asad" means "The Lion" in Arabic.

The base is secured by a 21 km security perimeter, with a city-like self-contained community inside, much like Baghdad's Green Zone (I've never been there, but this is what I understand from reading about it). It contains the conveniences of a regular American town, such as famous fastfood restaurants and theaters.

Because of its large size and high level of security, it is often visited by celebrities, entertainers, and members of the US administration.

Below you can find a map of Al Asad Iraq. If you know of a more detailed, better map please let me know and I will add it. I haven't found a close-up detailed one--maybe they're not released for security reasons.

Political Map Of North Africa

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usNorth Africa is the northernmost region of the African continent, lying north of and on the Sahara Desert. The exact definition of the area varies depending on which authority you ask, but the countries always included are the "Maghreb" countries of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, plus Egypt. Western Sahara (mostly occupied by Morocco) is usually included, and Sudan is often included as well. Mauritania is sometimes included.

Interestingly, inside Moroccan territory, there are a serious of enclaves still belonging to Spain. Formerly called Spanish North Africa, and now called "Plazas de soberanía" (Sovereign Territories) they are Spanish-governed pieces of Africa. See the last map below.

Map Of Russia And The Black Sea

When the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991, it was succeeded by an organization called the Commonwealth of Independent States, which is a loose economic confederation rather than a unified country with a single ruling authority.

Below you can find several map of Russia and the Black Sea, with the former Soviet Republics alongside them. The member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. However, Ukraine has never ratified the CIS charter, so its membership is unofficial.

Russia, with a land mass of 17,075,400 square kilometers, is the largest country in the world. It covers more than an eighth of the Earth’s total land area. It has a population of 142 million people, making it the 9th most populous country in the world. Did you know that Russia spans 11 time zones?!

The Black Sea is a large inland sea with an area of 436,400 km² (168,495 sq mi), forming a natural boundary between Europe and Western Asia. The Bosphorous Strait and The Strait of Dardanelles are considered the border between European Turkey and Asian Turkey.

Egypt Physical Map Images

Egypt physical map geography info for Middle East and North Africa studies. The Arab Republic of Egypt is located in North Africa, with the Sinai Peninsula located in Western Asia (the Suez Canal considered the dividing point between Africa and Asia. It is sometimes included in certain definitions of the Middle East, because of it's partial location in Asia. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the north of Egypt, while it borders Libya to the west, Israel and the Palestinian-controlled Gaza Strip to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, and Sudan to the south.

Egypt is quite a large country with an area of 1,001,450 square kilometers (386,660 sq miles), but most of its population of 80 million live near the Nile River and delta, creating a densely populated narrow strip of arable land. The vast desert areas are sparsely populated.

A Detailed Map Of Iraq

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usThe Republic of Iraq is located in the Middle East. It borders Jordan to the west, Syria to the northwest, Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to the south. It has a small area of coastline on the Persian Gulf, and has two major and infamous rivers: the Tigris and the Euphrates.

75-80% of Iraq's population are Arabs. There is a large Kurdish population in the north of the country (roughly 15-20%), and a smaller number of other minorities such as Assyrians and Turkmen. Both Arabic and Kurdish are now official languages of Iraq, and other minority languages are official on a local level where significant populations exist.

In terms of religion, Iraq's population is roughly 3% Christian and 97% Muslim. The Muslim population is estimated to be 60-65% Shi'a and 30-35% Sunni. See the 4th map below entitled "Iraq's Ethnic Mix".

Political Map Of Southeast Asia

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usThe Southeast Asia region is generally considered to consist of the following 11 countries: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The island of Papua is geographically considered to be in Oceania, but part of the island belongs to Indonesia and is therefore politically considered part of Southeast Asia. Conversely, Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands are geographically located in Southeast Asia but since they belong to Australia, they are politically considered part of Oceania.

The two major areas of Southeast are 1) Mainland Southeast Asia (sometimes known as Indochina) where the dominant religion is Buddhism, with smaller Muslim and Christian
populations; and 2) Maritime Southeast Asia (also known as the Malay Archipelago), where the dominant religion is Islam, followed by Christianity (most notably in the Philippines). The people from the two sub-areas tend to look racially different, with the Mainland people having lighter skin and features comparable to Northeast Asians, while those in Maritime Southeast Asia tend to have darker skin and features more comparable to Polynesians. But there is some overlap, of course.

Here is a Southeast Asia region map showing all the countries in the area, and another political map of Southeast Asia showing country flags. I hope these are useful.

City Of Detroit Downtown Map

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usDetroit is the largest city in Michigan state in the USA. It lies on the Detroit River, and is situated north of the Canadian town of Windsor (which lies immediately across the river and could be considered part of metro Detroit--except that it's in another country).

The city of Detroit has a population of 916,952, with a metro area population of 4,467,592. It ranks as the eleventh most populous city in the U.S. In 1950, Detroit had a population of 1.8 million (almost double today's population). The population decreased because of white flight (white people moved from the city to the suburbs because of racial tensions) and the construction of major freeways to outlying areas. The metro area today maintains a large population, but not concentrated in Detroit City. Detroit city's population to this day is over 80% black.

Here you can see some City of Detroit downtown map images for further information.

City Map Baghdad

With a population of over 7 million, Baghdad is the capital and largest city in Iraq. It is also the second largest city in the Middle East (after Tehran), and also the second largest city in the Arab world (after Cairo, Egypt). Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The infamous Tigris River runs through the middle of the city. Baghdad has a basically hot desert climate, with summer high temperatures averaging in the 40s, and temperatures break 50 degrees fairly often. In the winter, the climate is milder with average highs of 15-16 degrees, and nighttime temperatures that average as low as 4 degrees centrigrade. On January 11th, 2008 snow fell in Baghdad. This is not common, but happens on rare occasions.

Of course Baghdad is now under American military administration, and keeps its headquarters in a 10 square km (4 square mile) fortified area called The Green Zone.

Here are a few city map. Baghdad is a fascinating and exciting city, and I hope it will be possible to travel there in the future.

Philippines City Maps

Philippines is a very populous country, with a significant portion of the population residing in the urban centers. Here I've gathered some important Philippines City Maps for your use and convenience.

The largest city in Philippines is Quezon City with a population of 2,679,450, which is actually a part of metropolitan Manila. So effectively they, along with other cities in the area, form one urban area. I think of it as part of Manila.

Manila City itself has a population of 1,660,714 and is incredibly densely populated, with a population density of 43,079 people per square kilometer.

Physical Maps of Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is a subregion of the Asian continent. The classification generally includes the countries south of China, east of India, and north of Australia. Specifically: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Southeast Asia consists of two main areas: the mainland connected to the Asian continent's main land mass (for example, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos). And a maritime region of islands (for example, much of Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines, Indonesia, and East Timor).Southeast Asian wildlife in Indonesia.

The largest city in Southeast Asia is Jakarta, with a population of 8,699,600 and a metropolitan area of more than 23 million people. Close behind is Manila, Philippines, and Bangkok, Thailand.

Here are a couple of physical maps of Southeast Asia for you. The first is the best one I could find online. The second lacks some detail, but clearly shows major rivers and mountain peaks.

South Asia Physical Maps

South Asia is, like it sounds, a region in the southern part of the continent of Asia. It's exact definitions depend on the authority, but it usually includes all of the following countries: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and British Indian Ocean Territory (also known as Chagos Islands). Countries sometimes included are Afghanistan, Myanmar, and even Iran (by the UN's definition). I would ignore those choices myself, because they clearly fall into other regions.

Have a look and decide for yourself. Here are some South Asia Physical Maps for your information.

Kuwait City Street Map

Kuwait City is the capital city of Kuwait, an oil-rich Arab country in the Middle East, on the Persian Gulf. Kuwait City officially has a population of around 32,500 people, but in reality the city itself is just one small piece of a much greater urban area that collectively contains over 2 million people. If you look at the first map, you can see the various "suburbs" which are technically separate municipalities from the city center, but in practice function as one city.

The total area of the Kuwait City metro area is 200 km² (77.2 sq mi).

Below are some Kuwait City street map downloads for your information and convenience.
