In actuality it refers to a collection of hamlets and villages situated in the eastern part of Long Island, New York. All of these villages and hamlets technically lie within the incorporated towns of Southampton and East Hampton. Some ares in the Hamptons are among the most expensive real estate in the country, and countless rich, famous, and influential people talk about having a "House in the Hamptons", which has come to be regarded as quite a status symbol.

Some of the popular spots in the Hamptons include Southampton Village, Water Mill, Sagaponack, Sag Harbor, and Bridgehampton. Aside from culturally important areas, East Hampton also features eight state parks as well as historic spots of interest.

Key West is a city and an island in the Florida Keys. It is the southernmost city within the continental United States, and is known for its beautiful scenery, beaches, and year-round tropical weather.

There are basically only two seasons in Key West: a wet season and a dry season. November to April is the more sunny and drier season, whereas May to October is the wet season (or wetter season, would be a better description). In mainland Florida, in the wet season showers typically occur in the afternoon. But in Key West, they tend to occur in the early morning. This is great for vacationers who can sleep in during the showers and then enjoy the rest of their day uninterrupted. Of course, showers sometimes occur during other times of day. But in any case, Key West is drier than any other city in Florida.

Palm Springs is located inside the Coachella Valley, which is a desert valley surrounded by San Bernardino Mountains to the north, and the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south, the San Jacinto Mountains to the west, and the Little San Bernardino Mountains to the east. The summers are very hot and dry, and the winter months are warm with daily highs generally rising above 20 degrees - sometimes as high as 30. The winter can be cool at night, but normally pleasantly cool. Summer temperatures commonly reach the mid-40s with lows in the 20s or even 30s.

The city is east of Buffalo and lies on the southern side of Lake Ontario. On a very clear day, it may be possible to see Toronto from Rochester. The Genesee River runs through the city and bisects it.

Buffalo, NY is the second largest city in the state, after New York City. It has a population of 261,310, and its extended metro area has a population of 1,215,826. It may be the second largest city in the state, but it is a far cry from the massive metropolis that is New York City.

Buffalo is located in the Western part of New York State, on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, at the head of Niagara River. For Erie, Ontario lies just on the other side of Niagara River. Toronto, Ontario is about 100 miles (160 km) from Buffalo, and about a 1.5 to 2 hour drive plus any delays at the border crossing. Some people claim that you can see the CN Tower from Buffalo on a VERY clear day.

The population of Buffalo is approximately 54.43% white, 37.23% black, 1.4% Asian, and 7.54% Hispanic.

Winters are long, and can be very cold and snowy. Summers are warm, pleasant, and generally sunny throughout June, July, and August.

The metro population is significantly larger, clocking in at 1.25 million (more or less). Oklahoma is the eight-largest city in the country based on land area, meaning that this is quite a spread-out city and isn`t as densely populated as most cities of its size.

The population is about 68.4% white, 15.4% African American, 3.5% Native American, 3.5% Native American, and 10.1% Hispanic (of any race including mixed race).

The climate of Oklahoma City is semi-arid, with hot and humid summers and cold dry winters. It is known as one of the most tornado prone cities in the United States, with a "severe weather season" taking place between March and August - and most intensely in April and May.

Kentucky is not exactly located in the deep south, but its culture is generally thought of as southern and the deep south has definitely had an influence on Kentucky. Louisville is often nicknamed "the northernmost Southern city" in the US.

Salt Lake City is capital city of the American state of Utah. It is also the biggest city in the state with 186,440 people. No, it is not a giant city like New York or L.A., but when we look at SLC as part of its metropolitan area then it has 1,124,197, making it a sizeable medium size metropolis. We can also look at the extended metropolitan area known as Wasatch Front, which comprises about 80% of Utah`s population with 2,238,697.

Salt Lake City is home to the headquarters of the Mormons` Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and nearly half of the city`s population is Mormon, at least nominally so.

The climate of SLC is semi-arad, with hot dry summers, and cold winters with plenty of snow. The fall and spring are short transitional periods rather than full-length seasons.

Orlando is located in the central region of the US state of Florida. It is most famous for being the located of Walt Disney Resort (aka Disney World). The city itself is not really that big, with a population of just 238,300. It is, however, the center of a much bigger metropolitan area with a population of 2,134,411. This metro area is the 27th largest in the USA, and the third largest in Florida.

Aside from Walt Disney Resort, other attractions include SeaWorld, Gatorland, Universal Orlando Resort (consisting of Universal Studios Florida as well as Islands of Adventure), and the Wet`n Wild Water Park. It is the kind of city that can keep tourists (especially family travellers) busy for a week or more of jam-packed days. I`ve been to Orlando with my family twice, and we loved it. Especially Disney World, which is the jewel in the crown of any visit to Orlando.

Formerly known as Bombay, the city of Mumbai is the biggest city in India in terms of population. Its population is over 12 million in the city proper, and over 20 million for the metro area. That makes it the fourth largest city in the entire world. It is also considered the richest city in India - though poverty is still very evident throughout the city.

The city lies on the Western coast of India and has a large natural harbour, making it an important port city. It has a tropical climate that features dry, monsoon, and post monsoon seasons.The dry season lasts from December to May. From June to September, heavy monsoon weather affects the city. Occasional monsoon rains occur in October and November, which are typically considered the post-monsoon season. I have been to Mumbai once in late June, and much of the city was flooded with monsoon rains and an overloaded drainage system.

Honolulu Map

Honolulu is the biggest city and state capital of the US state of Hawaii. Located on the island of Oahu, the city is a medium size one with 390,738 people. The metro area turns this into a major city of 953,207. But due to the huge numbers of tourists visiting Hawaii around the year, Honolulu is a much more bustling place than a lot of other cities of this size.

Honolulu has a tropical climate with warm weather year round, with slightly cooler and wetter winters, though sunshine is common throughout the year. In the winter moneths the temperature range is typically 18-27 degrees, while in the summer months, the range is typically 23-31 degrees. Not a lot of variation, though when it`s cloudy during the winter, with the sea breeze from the ocean, it`s not uncommon to feel a little chilly. But it`s still much better than being in New York or Toronto during the winter!

New Orleans Map

New Orleans is the largest city and metro area in the American state of Louisiana. The city itself is not gigantic, with a mere population of 343,829. The metro area is sizeable, with around 1.2 million people. This somewhat small size doesn`t do justice to the prominence and importance of New Orleans in the American psyche and culture. New Orleans is not only an important port city, it is also a cultural center known for its unique regional cuisine as well as being the birthplace of jazz music. It also holds annual festivities such as Mardi Gras, which draws crowds from around the country and around the world.

The climate of New Orleans is a humid subtropical climate, with short and mild winters, and long summers that get very hot and humid. Hurricanes affect the city greatly, especially because of its low elevation which makes it particularly vulnerable to flooding. We saw this, of course, during the disaster of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Miami Map

Miami is another one of those cities whose name can ignite the imagination by its mere mention. World famous for its beautiful climate and beaches, as well as its importance in the southeastern United States and its large Hispanic population (70%!), it is an important financial and commercial center. It has been measured to be the wealthiest city in the United States, and the 5th wealthiest in the entire world. It has also been called America`s cleanest city by Forbes magazine, thanks to its large numbers of parks, open green spaces, good air quality, clean streets, and extensive recycling activities. Downtown Miami is South Florida`s financial and business center, with a higher concentration of international banks than anywhere else in the country.

Despite Miami city`s prominence, it has a relatively small population of about 400,000. That is because most of Metro Miami`s population lives outside of the city itself. The population of the whole metro area is a mindblowing 5.5 million. Can you believe it? A city of 400,000 is the center of a metro area with over 5 million people.

Miami`s climate is a tropical monsoon climate with just two seasons: a hot humid summer, and a short, warm winter with significantly less precipitation. Though it would be a stretch to call the winter a dry season, since rainfall is plentiful year-round.

Atlanta is the biggest city in the U.S. state of Georgia. It has a small-medium size population of 420,003, making it the 40th largest city in the United States. This small figure doesn`t do justice to the size and importance of Atlanta, which is the central focal point of the massive Atlanta metropolitan area, which has a huge population of 5,268,860, the ninth largest metro area in the country. This entire metro area is the real Atlanta, in a cultural and practical sense. The city is large, bustling, and an important transportation hub via air, train, and highway. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the world`s busiest airport. Are you starting to see why the figure of 420,003 is misleading?

The size of Atlanta`s economy ranks 15th among cities around the globe, and ranks 6th among American cities. It is a center of finance, services, I.T., and higher education. Many giant corporations have their headquarters in metro Atlanta, including Coca Cola, Home Depot, AT&T, UPS, Delta Air Lines, and Turner Broadcasting.

The city`s climate is considered humid subtropical, with hot humid summers and cool winters - cooler than many other cities in the southern US. It receives plentiful rainfall throughout the year, particularly in summer and winter.

The city is situated between the Rocky Mountains (which lie to the west) and the High Plains (which lie to the east). Denver is located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, but not in the Rocky Mountains, so its climate is not as cold as you might expect. In the winter there is snow, but it usually ends and melts fairly quickly. Temperatures don`t typically stay below zero for long. Winters are usually sunny and dry. Summers are warm to hot.

Seattle Map

Seattle is the largest city in the Northwestern USA, and the 23rd largest city in the whole of the country. But that is only taking into account the city proper, which has a medium-sized population of 608,000. But if we take into account the whole metropolitan area including the suburbs of Seattle, then it is actually the 15th largest metro area in the country, with a total of 3.4 million people.

Seattle lies near the Canadian-American land border, a mere 183 km away. There is a busy land crossing for cars that takes you from Seattle to the Vancouver area. The city is located on an isthmus between Puget Sound (an extension of the Pacific Ocean) and Lake Washington.

Like much of the Pacific Northwest, Seattle has a Marine west coast climate with mild dry (well, sometimes dry) summers, and mild-to-cool wet winters. It is a city that is plagued by clouds and overcast skies, and drizzly rains for much of the year, particularly from October to May.

El Paso Map

El Paso is a city with a population of 649,121, which makes it the 19th largest city in the United States. But that statistic is a little misleading. Let`s compare El Paso to Detroit, the 18th largest city in the US. By just looking at their city populations they look comparable in size and importance, but if we look at the metro area that determines the amount of activity in the city, Metro Detroit has around 5 million while Metro El Paso has only 800,000. This metro reality makes El Paso a much smaller city in practical terms.

But one interesting fact about El Paso is that it lies on the Texas-Mexico border, and lies adjacent to the city of Juarez which lies in Chihuahua provice, Mexico. These two cities are often thought of as a single trans-border metropolitan area, similar to San Diego and Tijuana.

El Paso has a hot desert climate, with extremely hot dry summers with little humidity or precipitation. Winters are mild with relatively high daily highs, of around 15 degrees or so, but with cold night time temperatures which occasionally reach freezing.

Charlotte is the home of Bank of America and has been a major financial center, second in America after New York City, in fact.

That is only the 34th largest metro area in the US.

Like most of the Midwest, Indianapolis has 4 distinct seasons. The summers can be blistering hot as well as humid, while Spring and Autumn are pleasantly warm, and winters are cold with daytime highs hovering slightly above zero. Springtime weather is unpredictable, with warm weather but sometimes intermittent cold weather which can even include snow.

Texas has a number of very large cities, and Austin is a fairly big one to add to the list, though it is not a huge metropolis like Dallas or Houston. But with a population of about 800,000, it is the 14th largest city in the USA, and is the capital city of the state of Texas. The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos metropolitan area has a total population of around 1.9 million.

Austin has a humid subtropical climate, with blistering hot summers with high humidity, and mild winters with relatively high daily highs (usually above 15 degrees). Daily lows can fall far below the daily high, with around 18 days a year falling below freezing at night or in the early morning. Though even on those days, the high temperature will likely be much higher than the night temperature and probably quite comfortable.

San Francisco Map

On paper San Francisco doesn`t sound like a huge city. It has a population of 805,235, making it only the 13th largest city in the USA. There are two factors, though, that make San Francisco a large metropolis in practice. One of those factors is the fact that San Francisco is the second most densely populated city in the USA, after New York City. That means that the city is constantly hustling and bustling, and has the kind of urban energy that a much larger city has, even though it may be smaller in area. The second factor is that San Francisco is the focal point and economic center of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area metropolis, one of the most populous metro areas in the USA (actually, it is the 6th most populous), with a total population of 7.15 million people. The area includes other well-known large cities like Oakland and San Jose, the latter actually having a bigger population than San Francisco. But San Francisco remains the bustling business center of the metropolis, partly because of its historic importance and position on the San Francisco Bay.

The climate of San Francisco and the whole Bay Area is a subtropical Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and mild wet winters. But San Francisco`s summers are cooler than most other major US cities in the summer. San Francisco has a narrow range of temperature variation year-round, making it an all-round pleasant place to live.

Dallas Map

San Antonio is a bigger city than Dallas, Texas. However, the Dallas-Forth Worth metro area is bigger than San Antonio`s metro area. With 6,477,315 people, it is actually the fourth largest metro area in the USA, and the largest in the south. This makes Dallas seem like a significantly bigger and busier city than San Antonio. Dallas itself has a population of 1.98 million (the ninth largest in the US).

Like much of Texas, Dallas has a humid subtropical climate. In the sumer it is one of the hottest places in the US, with temperatures reaching as high as 47 degrees celsius (117 degrees F), with 38 degrees and higher being very common. In winter the daytimes are mild, with highs generally between 13 and 21 degrees. But nights are cool or even cold, with occasionally freezing temperatures. It usually snows about once a year in the area.

The city isof course famous for the Dallas Cowboys, and even moreso for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, a squad that`s world-renowned both for cheering/dancing skill and hotness. Men all around the globe know and love the Cowboy Cheerleaders!

Despite the legendary status and global name recognition of Miami, if we look at just the city population and exclude country and metro population, then the largest city in Florida is actually Jacksonville. It is the 11th largest city in all of the United States by population. It is also the largest city in the continental U.S. (measured by land area). Jacksonville itself has a population of 821,784 and its metro area has a total population of around 1.3 million. That is significantly smaller than Miami`s metro population. The reason Jacksonville is so large but its metro population is so much smaller than Miami, is that in 1968 Jacksonville City consolidated with the entire surrounding county, making most of the metro area all a part of a single city. Without that consolidation of local governments, Jacksonville would be much less populous than Miami.

Like much of Florida, Jacksonville has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters.

San Jose Map CA

Let me warn you that there is more than one San Jose: San Jose, California and San Jose, Costa Rica. This entry is about San Jose, California. San Jose is overshadowed by the legendary status of both Los Angeles and San Francisco, but it is actually the 10th largest city in the United States with a population of nearly 1 million. Even though it is somewhat bigger than San Francisco, they are part of the same extended metro area (the Greater San Francisco Bay Area) and San Francisco is somewhat more famous because of it`s the central focal point of the Bay area, and it`s longer history as a major city. Some people break this area down into the San Francisco Bay Area, and the San Jose/Silicon Valley area rather than counting them as a single metro area. But together they make up an urban area of 7.5 million people, the sixth largest metropolis in the USA.

Until the 1950s San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley was a mostly undeveloped agricultural area, but development rapidly accelerated after that. And as the valley became a technology center that attracted business and workers from elsewhere, the area became rapidly more urbanized.

Like the San Francisco Bay Area in general, San Jose`s climate is subtropical. Though it receives less rain because of its location inland and partially surrounded by mountains. Summers are warm and dry, and winters are mild with highs in the range of 15-20 degrees (59 to 68 F). Though winter lows are in the range of 5 to 8 degrees (40 to 46.5 F). It is an all around pleasant place to live.

San Antonio River Walk Map

San Antonio, Texas is a cool city for tourists to visit. One of its coolest attractions is the San Antonio River Walk, also known as Paseo del Rio. It is a cool pedestrian street that follows alongside the San Antonio River, which snakes through downtown. What makes the River Walk so special is that it is separated from the street level vehicle traffic, situated one level below it. This maintains a relaxed and casual atmosphere along the Walk, which is lined with atmospheric bars and cafes. In a city with a subtropical climate like San Antonio, this kind of riverside pedestrian street is a joyous experience.

The River Walk is popular not only for its nightlife and cafes, but also because it connects various tourist sites and is a pleasant and convenient way to find your way between them. Sites like the Alamo, Rivercenter Mall, Marriage Island, HemisFair Park, etc, are easy to tour between using the Paseo del Rio.

San Antonio is another one of those places that to me always seemed like it only existed on tv and in the movies. I associate it with spicy food and cowboy films. But it is actually a massive city, the seventh largest city in the United States and bigger than Dallas. It has a population of 1.3 million people, with the metropolitan region having about 2.2 million. Even though the city itself is seventh largest in the US, the metro area is not nearly seventh biggest, in fact it is only the 24th largest metro area, which can make San Antonio seem comparatively small, relative to other cities of a similar population.

San Antonio lies at on the Western border of the humid subtropical region, and can be either very humid or dry depending on various factors. It is very hot in the summer, with cool to warm winters. Winters can see fairly high daily high temperatures, but at night the temperature occasionally falls below zero. Snow falls about once every four years in San Antonio. March through November sees daily high temperatures above 20 degrees celsius.

San Diego Map

San Diego is often overshadowed by Los Angeles which is found just a couple of hours to its north. Los Angeles is the second largest city in the US, and the largest in the Western US, not to mention it is a center of the entertainment industry and looms large in everyone`s imaginations. But don`t be fooled - San Diego is no small town, and has plenty of beauty and excitement to offer.

San Diego is actually the eighth largest city in the United States and has a population of around 1.3 million. The metro area has around 3.1 million, making this a bonafide metropolis. It was once a part of Mexico, until it was lost to the United States in war and became part of the union (along with all of California) in 1850. It lies immediately next to the Mexican border, with Tijuana essentially forming part of the San Diego metro area, despite the border in between.

It is a beautifully scenic place with gorgeous beaches and palm trees lining the streets, with mild to warm weather year round. It is one of the most pleasant places to live in the U.S.

Phoenix Map

When you think of Phoenix, Arizona you may think of a small dusty town in the middle of the desert, full of cactii and palm trees. Well, all of those things are kind of true except for the "small" part. Phoenix is a big city, so big that visitors are often surprised. It is the sixth largest city in the United States, with a population of close to 1.5 million (and that`s in the city alone, not the metropolitan area). The metro area has around 4.2 million, making this a full-on metropolis.

Phoenix is one of the hottest cities in the United States, which rivals some of the hottest places in the Middle East during the summer months. In an average year, 110 days will see temperatures of over 38 degrees celsius (100 degrees F). From May until September, temperatures are HOT by anyone`s definition. The highest temperature to ever hit the Arizona city was 50 degrees (122 degrees F). In the winter Phoenix is not hot, and night and morning temperatures can occasionally reach below freezing and frost is a common occurrence (though not as much in central Phoenix where the city heat brings the temperature up a little bit). Rainfall is scarce, though summer monsoon weather raises humidity with occasional heavy rain.

Philadelphia is one of those cities you may have never been to, but have definitely heard of from music, movies, and tv. It is a culturally important place, but not in the same way that some other major cities in the US are. That is partly because of Philadelphia`s proximity to New York City, by which it is often overshadowed.

The city has a population of over 1.5 million, and is the focal point of the Delaware Valley, a metro area with a total of over 6 million people. Philly is fifth largest city in America, and the metro area is also the fifth largest in the country. But the whole of the Northeastern United States is so densely populated that is almost like one giant megalopolis, incorporating both New York City whose metro area spreads over into Connecticut and New Jersey; Philadelphia whose metro area spreads from Pennsylvania into Delaware and New Jersey; Boston whose metro area spreads from Massachusetts into New Hampshire; Pittsburgh which is in Pennsylvania; Providence which spreads from Rhode Island into Massachusetts; Hartford in Connecticut; and Buffalo and Rochester in New York.

When you think of Texas, you might think of dry desert land and tumbleweeds blowing in the wind, cowboys riding on horses, and people firing rifles. But Texas is a lot more than just wild frontier, which becomes evident when you visit the huge major city of Houston. Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States, after New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. With a population of 2.1 million it is hardly the rural frontier you may have been picturing a moment ago. The Houson-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area is the sixth largest in America with around 6 million people.

Houston is located bnear the Gulf of Mexico and has a humid subtropical climate. On average, over 99 days per year see temperatures above 32 degrees celsius (90 degrees F), which may not sound blistering hot but remember the humidity can reach over 90 percent relative humidity. The hottest temperature on record in Houston was 43 degrees celsius (109 degrees F). That is far from the hottest temperature recorded in the US, but Houston`s consistent year round relative heat is what it is known for. In winter, the high temperatures hover around 17 degrees celsius, with cold nights reaching as low as 4 degrees celsius. So Houston isn`t always hot, but is hotter than most places.

Chicago Neighbourhood Map

Chicago is a huge city that may seem daunting to navigate, but it can easily broken down into districts and neighbourhoods. If you think of the city not as a single monolithic whole but rather as a collection of smaller areas, it is much easier to take in the city. The city as a whole has a population of about 2.7 million. The entire metro area has 9,461,105, but that includes towns outside of Chicago proper, and therefore separate from the neighbourhoods in the maps below.

There are around 200 unofficial neighbourhoods in Chicago, and 77 official "community areas" which are used for administrative and planning purposes.

Chicago Transmit Map

CTA, or Chicago Transit Authority is the mass transit system covering the massive city of Chicago and its surrounding metro area. This is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to get around the Windy City, since transit reaches pretty much every area of the city, bypassing all the horrendous traffic that can sometimes pile up. The transit system includes the former Chicago Surface Lines, which is an above-ground street car network that became part of the CTA. A train system is also part of the Chicago Transit Authority.

Chicago Map

Chicago is the principal city in the state of Illinois, and is the third biggest city in the United States in terms of population (number 1 is New York City and number 2 is Los Angeles). The city itself has about 2.7 million people, while the metro area of "Chicagoland" has about 9.8 million. O`hare International Airport that serves Chicago is the second busiest airport in the world, when including both passenger traffic and cargo traffic. Chicago is a big center for business, finance, and industry which accounts for a large part of that traffic.

Chicago is situated on the edge of Lake Michigan, and two rivers flow through the city: the Chicago River which flows through downtown, as well as the Calumet River which flows through the industrial area of South Chicago. The city is nicknamed "The Windy City" because of the breezes that blow from these bodies of water. I`ve only spent a day or so in Chicago, but the wind was bone-chilling.

For such a huge city, it was founded surprisingly recently, in 1833. It was one of the fastest growing cities in history.

New York City is widely considered "The Capital of the World". It is the center of one of the most populous metro areas in the world, and the city itself is the largest in the United States. It is also the center of world commerce and finance, culture such as fashion and art, and an important center for education, research and other aspects of global life. New York City is a name that evokes grand imagery in the minds of people everywhere. Even people who have never been to New York have an image of the city from movies, tv, and music.

NYC has a population of 8,175,133, with the metro area having close to 19 million people. The city is divided into 5 boroughs, each of which has its own personality and local consciousness, and each of which (strangely) is administered by a different county. The boroughs are Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.

Newark, New Jersey is just across the water from downtown Manhattan and is a part of Metro NYC, except it is not in New York state but rather in New Jersey.

Blank Map of North America

North America is the continent located in the Northern Hemisphere, and for the most part located in the Western Hemisphere. Some people think of North America as only Canada and the United States, but it also includes Mexico, the countries of Central America, and the Caribbean including Cuba, and some people include Greenland as part of North America even though it is a territory of Denmark. Though there are many common definitions of North America that include any combination of the above.

If we include all of the above, the population of North America is around 528,720,588, and it has a total land area of 24,709,000 square km (that means 9,540,000 square miles for you Americans). The most commonly spoken languages in North America are English and Spanish, but French is also spoken in some places including the Canadian province of Quebec and is an official language of Canada.

The first blank map of North America and the second show the state and provincial boundaries, but the names of those provinces and states are not indicated.

The next two blank North America maps have no state or provincial borders. These are obviously more challenging to fill in.

Blank Map of Middle East

Here you can find a blank map of the Middle East for your reference and self study. In some of the maps the country borders are indicated, but the names of the countries and their cities and other features are not indicated.

Maps of the Middle East are not static, and sometimes political changes occur in the Middle East, due to wars and so on. On top of that, some countries or geographic features are referred to by different names depending on who is speaking. For example, Israel is not recognized as a country by many Arabs so Israel is often replaced with "Palestine" on maps produced in Arab countries. And the Persian Gulf, as most Westerners know it, is referred to as "The Arabian Gulf" by Arabs. Keep these kinds of things in mind when deciding how to label your blank maps.

This first map does not include country borders. Ironically, that may actually make your life simpler when it comes time to label the map!

It could be said that this map is outdated, because it shows the Westbank (currently occupied by Israel and under partial Palestinian autonomy) as part of Jordan. This hasn`t been the reality since 1967. It also shows the Gaza Strip as part of Egypt.

The next blank map of the Middle East is not out of date, but you can say its borders related to Israel and Palestine are incomplete. The Westbank and the Gaza Strip are not indicated. In an Arab country, the entire country would be labelled "Palestine" and in Israel, the entire country would be labelled "Israel". In Israel it is actually illegal to produce a commercial map that indicates the boundaries of the Westbank and Gaza.

Blank Map of Central America

Contrary to popular belief, Central America is neither a continent in and of itself, nor a part of South America. It is geographically a part of North America, though is typically thought of as its own sub-region because of the cultural, political, and economic ties between the countries in the area.

Central America includes Panama, Belize, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Some people tend to include Mexico because of its linguistic and cultural ties to the sub-region, but really it is not part of Central America. The official language of every country is Spanish, yet numerous indigenous languages are also spoken. Around 42 million people live in these countries, across an area of 523,780 square km.

Blank Map of Asia

Asian geography is not typically covered in United States high school curriculum, as far as I know. At least not in great detail. But I do get a lot of emails from people in Canada and Australia and other places who request more maps of Asia. Some of them are studying about Asia in school, and need some study aids like a blank map of Asia. So I decided to upload a small collection of such maps for those people to make use of.

Asia is a huge continent with a lot of countries in it, so you probably can`t just memorize the map of Asia passively. So these blank Asia maps will help you when you practice and quiz yourself, then when time finally comes for your big geography test you will be confident about where all the countries are.

This map doesn`t quite show all of Asia, it just shows parts of Western Asia (though other parts are cut off) and South Asia (including India and Pakistan), Central Asia and East Asia. Some people don`t think of the Middle East or Western Asia when they say the word "Asia", so maybe this map is all you want. But in the two maps above, all of Asia is included, including the Middle East, etc.

Political Map of Africa

Africa is the huge continent situated to the south of Europe. It is the second largest continent in the world, and has the second biggest population out of any continent in the world. Approximately 14.72% of the world`s population is in Africa. In specific numerical terms, that means around one billion people, similar to the population of India or China.

Africa is usually said to have 55 countries, which includes the disputed territory of Western Sahara (which is internationally recognized but is occupied by Morrocco). 48 of these countries are located on the mainland of the African contient, while 6 are island nations. It also includes the very new country of Southern Sudan.

The African Union includes 54 of the 55 internationally recognized African countries, with Morocco refusing to join because of the AU`s inclusion of Western Sahara.

There are other de facto nations with their own independently operating governments in Africa, specifically in the place we commonly know as Somalia. Only one government is internationally recognized in Somalia, but 2 de facto nations of Somaliland and Puntland exist in different areas of the country. The only thing that keeps Somaliland and Puntland from being on the political map of Africa is a lack of recognition by other countries. In practical terms, they are independent. This was the situation with South Sudan until its recent independence.

Political Map of Asia

Asia is the largest of the world`s continents, and also the one with the biggest population. 60% of the world`s population lives in Asia. It is technically not a continent in geographic terms, but rather a subcontinent of Eurasia. But in political terms it is its own continent, as it is by convention.

Asia is a massive and culturally diverse continent. There is little in common between Jakarta and Tokyo and Riyadh, but all of them are in Asia. More conveninent regional categories exist, such as "Southeast Asia" or "Middle East" or Northeast Asia, which tend to represent more logical cultural groupings and economic partnerships.

A while ago I posted an entry about printable maps of the USA, and one of the most popular maps on that page was a blank map of the United States. So today I decided to gather more maps similar to that one and upload them for your benefit.

People who might benefit from these blank USA maps are students who are studying American geography in school and need to quiz themselves, and also teachers who can use these maps for geography tests and the like. I always had a hard time memorizing the locations of all 50 states, so I wish I could have easily printed out maps like this when I was in highschool. For example, Turkey is included in Europe by some people but in Asia and the Middle East by others. Russia, too, has territory in both Europe and Asia so it is hard to classify. But there are around 50 countries in Europe. 27 countries are member states of the European Union, an economic union with countries using the Euro as its common currency.

Political Map Of USA

The USA is an interesting political entity because it is a federal union of states, which are all a part of one country but have a large degree of state autonomy. There are 50 states in the union, though that may some day change if a territory of the US such as Peurto Rico or Guam opt pass a referendum to opt into the union. But for now, those 50 states include 48 contiguous states (often referred to as the Continential United States) as well as Hawaii, a state comprised of islands in Polynesia; and Alaska, located near Russian and separated from the Continental US by Canada. Each state in the US has its own state government and elected governor.

Political Map of South America

South America is a continent in the Western Hemisphere, and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere (though part of it extends into the Northern Hemisphere as well). Geographically speaking, all of the Americas is one continent and South America is considered a subcontinent. But politically it is its own self-contained continent with characteristics that make it quite distinct from North America.

There are twelve countries in the continent, including (in alphabetical order) Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. French Guiana is an additional territory there, which is under the sovereignty of France, and not an independent country. Panama is typically considered to be part of North America rather than South America, being situated in the Central America subregion of N.A.

The total area of South America is 17,840,000 square kilometers (and that means 6,890,000 square miles for all you Americans!). The population is more than 371 million.

One of the uniting features of most of the countries in the continent is the Spanish language, though the biggest country in South America, Brazil, does not use Spanish and uses Portugese instead.

Hilton Head Island Map

Hilton Head Island is a resort island in Beaufort County in South Carolina. It is situated closer to Savannah, Georgia (32 km or 20 miles away) than it is to Charleston, South Carolina (153 km or 95 miles away). It is a small island of 55.5 sq miles, or 143.9 km2, with a local population of 37,099. The entire island is an incorporated town, called either Hilton Head Island or Hilton Head.

Despite its small local population, every year many tourists (in fact, over 2.25 million visitors) from the mainland make their way to Hilton Head to enjoy its beaches, parks, and cultural events.

Catalina Island Map

Santa Catalina Island, California (which is commonly called just "Catalina Island") lies 35 kilometers, or about 22 miles, off the coast of Los Angeles. It`s a rocky island that rises as high as 639 meters tall (that`s 2,097 feet for you Americans). The island is tiny and measures just 74.98 square miles (194.2 km square miles).

The island is inhabited, though the population is a small one of just 3,696. 3127 of those live in the single official town called Avalon. But even though the local population of the island is very small, it actually gets a lot of tourist visitors - approximately one million of them every year. This is partly thanks to its proximity to Los Angeles, and the "Airport in the Sky" ferries that shuttle passengers over from the coast. Those with more money to burn can actually take a helicopter!

The Catalina Island Conservancy maintains the island`s environment and quality of life. Tourists can engage in hiking and mountain biking activities, though they need a permit from the conservancy. The conservation fees involved keep the number of participants low, allowing for both conservation and enjoyment of the outdoor sports of the area.

It is a small island measuring at 21 km long and around 6 km wide at its widest. In terms that Americans would understand, that is 13 miles long and about 4 miles wide.

Sannibel Island is situated in Flordia, off the Gulf coast near Fort Myers. It is a tiny island that consists of 33.16 square miles (or 85.9 km2 for Americans), and has a small local population of just over 6000. The entire island is incorporated as a city, called Sanibel.

The island retains its quiet and peaceful natural environment, in large part thanks to the Comprehensive Land Usage Plan, a conservation plan aimed at limiting development that would harm the island`s ecology. However, the old ferry that used to run between the mainland and the island has been replaced by a causeway. The first causeway featured a draw bridge, but a new higher bridge that runs uninterrupted is now functioning.

Sanibel Island is popular with tourists for its beaches and wildlife sanctuaries, including the "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Like most of south Florida, the island has a humid subtropical climate that is hot and humid in summer, and mild and humid in winter.

Greece has an incredibly long and rich history stretching back thousands of years. This includes the Hellenistic period as well as the period of Roman rule.

Easter Island Map

Easter is a famous island in the southeast Pacific, the area commonly referred as Polynesia. The island is a part of Chile, after being annexted in 1888. It is a habited island, though it is only sparsely populated with a population of 5,034. And it is a small island covering only 163.6 km2, or 63.1 square miles.

So why is such an isolated, small, and sparsely populated island so famous and well-known? Well, Easter Island`s 887 "moai" statues are iconic and seen in images and tv shows all over the world. The statues were created by the Rapa Nui people between 1250 and 1500. The main Moai area is called Rano Raraku, but Moai were also transported to the outer perimeters of the island.

Hopefully the above maps were useful, because Greece is such a cool place to visit that it would be a shame if you don`t actually end up traveling there.

Greece is located in southeastern Europe, next to Turkey to its east. Greece also shares borders with Albania, FYROM (Macedonia), and Bulgaria. It has coastline on the Aegean Sea to its east, with the Ionian sea to the west, and the Mediterranean to the south. Greece has a total of 13,676 km (or 8498 miles), which is the twelfth longest coastline in the world (even though Greece is only the 96th largest country in the world. That is because of its huge number of islands (in total around 1400, though only 227 have people living on them).

The name "Greece" may arouse images of resorts and party times on the Greek Islands, but 80% of the country is actually mountainous. This is part of the reason it has a small population of just 11,305,118. Around 3,737,550 of those people live in the capital city and principal metropolis of Athens.

The total land area of Greece is 131,990 km2, or 50,944 square miles.

Rhode Island Map

e Island is a state in the United States of America, in the New England region of the northeastern USA. It happens to be the smallest state in the whole country, with an area of just 1,214 square miles (or 3,140 km2). It is one of the original colonies of what would become the United States, and was the first of the thirteen colonies to declare independence. Strangely, it was the last of the colonies to ratify the US constitution.

The state has a small population of 1,052,567. The state capital and principal city of Providence has a population of 178,042. Curiously, the city`s metropolitan area has a population of 1,630,956 - greater than the entire state population! How is that possible? Well, it`s because the metropolitan area crosses state lines.

Las Vegas is a city in Nevada, in the United States. It is the largest city in Nevada, but is not its capital city (that would be Reno). Las Vegas is one of those infamous cities that sparks up vivid imagery every time its name is mentioned. It is often called the "City of Sin" because of its reputation as a place for various vices, like prostitution, gambling, and wild partying.

Las Vegas is not a huge city, having a population of 583,756. The metropolitan area has a population of 1,951,269. But on the Vegas Strip in its downtown core, Las Vegas is anything but a regular city. It is a year-round resort city, vacation destination, and conference center. On the strip, you see more tourists than you see locals. And many of the residents are not originally from Vegas but have moved from elsewhere to make money in the city`s various industries catering to tourists. Yet the further you venture out from the strip, the more normal Las Vegas becomes.

Other nicknames for Las Vegas include "The Entertainment Capital of the World" and "The Marriage Capital of the World". My own brother got married in Las Vegas two years ago, so it`s a fitting nickname if you ask me!

Las Vegas is actually a major city, but to most people around the world, the name "Las Vegas" means specifically the Las Vegas Strip. That is the stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard that goes for 6.8 km (4.2 miles). A little known fact is that the strip is actually not inside Las Vegas city. It is outside the city limits in two townships called Paradise and Winchester.

It is a strip covered with major hotels, casinos, resort properties, nightclubs, and other places for vacationers to stay and enjoy themselves. The wild and outlandish architecture of some of the hotels and casinos on the strip is itself a major attraction for tourists.

Resorts may not be what you imagine when you hear the name "Turkey". Due to its status as a Muslim country and its location on the edge of the Middle East, many people`s image of Turkey is that of veils and camels. But southern Turkey is a place full of beach resorts, some of which double as massive party towns.

The oldest and well-known of those resort towns are Bodrum and Marmaris, though they have become quite developed and paved over, losing some of their old natural country charm. Many people recommend the Lycian coast, which is slightly more off the beaten tourist path and has maintained more of its old charm.

The Republic of Turkey, better known as just "Turkey", is a country located mostly in Western Asia. Many Turkish citizens view themselves as Europeans rather than Asians or Middle Easterners. But Turkey is often classified as part of the Middle East.

Turkey is bordered to the east by Iran, the southeast by Iraq and Syria, to the northeast by Armenia and Georgia, and to the northwest by Greece and Bulgaria. This geographic position at the crossroads between Europe, the Middle East, and the former USSR has shaped Turkey`s culture and history into what it is today.

The largest city is Istanbul, with a population of around 8.8 million in the city itself, and 13.26 million in the Istanbul metropolitan province. The total population of Turkey is 73,722,988. The capital city of Ankara is located in central Anatolia and has a population of 4.4 million in its metro area.

Great Lakes Map

The Great Lakes are located in the northeastern section of North America, straddling the border or Canada and the United States. The 5 Great Lakes are Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Eerie, and Lake Ontario. Measuring based on the surface area of their water, they form the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world, covering 244,106 square km - or 94,250 square miles. In fact, they hold 21% of the world`s fresh water on the surface.

A number of large cities and towns are located on the Great Lakes, the largest being Chicago which sits on the edge of Lake Michgan, as does Detroit. Toronto sits on Lake Ontario.

The Canada-USA border cuts through Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Eerie, and Lake Ontario. Only Lake Michigan is situated entirely in the USA.

Amman Map

Down below you can find information about Amman, Jordan as well as Amman map downloads.

Amman is the capital city of The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, as well as its most populous city by far. It has a population of about 2 million, with the Greater Amman area having around 2.8 million. That is expected to grow to 6.5 million by 2025 due to rapid migration, thanks to Amman`s impressive economic growth that is unprecedented in the Arab World outside of the Gulf region.

Amman has a long history stemming back to 7000 BC. In the early part of the 20th century, though, it remained a small city. It wasn`t until 1949 when a huge influx of Palestinian refugees from the newly created State of Israel turned the small town into a populous city. This happened once again in 1967 after Israel seized the Westbank from Jordan. Amman remains a common destination for refugees fleeing the tensions in Iraq, as well as though seeking refuge from the occupation of the Westbank.

In the summers Amman is a hot and dry city. However, because of its elevation the winters get quite cold with night time temperatures occasionally reaching zero. Frost is common in the night and early morning in winter, and snow occurs once a year or so.

As you can see in the above map of Iran files, the Islamic Republic of Iran, better know as just "Iran" is a country in the Middle East. It is bordered by Iraq to the west; Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan to the northwest; Turkmenistan to the northeast; and Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east.

Despite the common misperception that Iran is an Arab country, it is in fact not an Arab country. Its main ethnic group is Persians, and the principal language is Farsi (also known as Persian). It is widely considered the cradle of civilization, with the first Persian dynasty existing in 2800 BC (the Elamite Kingdom). The Medes, Achaemenids, Hellenic Seleucids, Parthians, Sassanids, and the Muslims have all conquered and controlled Iran throughout its millenia-old history. The total size of Iran is 1,648,195 km2, which means 636,372 square miles to the Americans out there. Its population is approximately 75,330,000, 90 to 95% of which are Shia Muslims. 4 to 8% are Sunni Muslims, and 2% are non-Muslims including Bahai`s, Jews, Christians, and other small minorities.

As for ethnicity, roughly 65% are considered Persians, 16% are Azerbaijanis, 7% are Kurds, Lurs are 6%, Arabs and Baluchi are both 2%, Turkmens are 1%, and various other tribal minorities make up a fraction of 1% each.

The capital city is Tehran, with an estimated population of 8,429,807. It is a huge metropolis, one of the biggest in Western Asia.

Syria is an Arabic country located in the Middle East. Its full name is the Syrian Arab Republic. It is bordered by Lebanon to the west as well as the Mediterranean Sea; Turkey to the north; Iraq to the east; Jordan to its south; and Israel to the southwest. One portion of Syria called the Golan Heights is occupied by Israel after being taken in the 6 Day War of 1967. Israel since annexed the Golan Heights, but negotiations to return them in exchange for peace have taken place intermittently.

The population of Syria is 22,717,417. 75% of those people are Sunni Muslim, 13% are Shia Muslim, 9% are Christian, and 3% are Druze. About 90% of the population is ethnically Arab, with significant minorities of Assyrians, Armenians, Turkmen, and Circassians.

The total land area of the country is 185,180 square km, or 71,479 square miles.

The current president is Bashar al-Assad, yet there is currently an uprising aimed at toppling his rule. His repression of this uprising has received worldwide condemnation.

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, better known as simply "Jordan", is an Arab country in the Middle East. It is bordered by Israel and the Westbank to the west, Iraq to the east, Syria to the north, and Saudi Arabia to the south. It is mostly landlocked, though is has access to the Gulf of Aqaba and Red Sea from the port city of Aqaba. It shares no land border with Egypt, but Egypt lies in close proximity to Jordan and is accessible by ferry boat from Jordan.

The capital city of Jordan is Amman, which has a population of approximately 2 million. The national population is 6,407,085.

The whole country, has a an altitude above 300 meters (984 feet), with the exception of the Jordan Rift Valley which leads down to the Dead Sea. The Rift Valley is the hottest part of the country, particularly in winter when its temperatures remain relatively warm. Amman, by contrast, can see snow, and cold temperatures with precipitation are common in the winter. Average daytime winter temperatures are 13 degrees, a far cry from the sweltering desert heat that most Westerners think of when they imagine the Middle East. The summers in Jordan, however, are indeed very hot and dry.

The North Sea is part of the Atlantic Ocean, situated between Scandinavia, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Great Britain. It is connected to the ocean via the English Channel and the Norwegian Sea.

It is a large sea that stretches more than 970 km long (that`s 600 miles for you Americans), and 580 km wide (around 360 miles). Its total surface area is about 750,000 square km (290,000 square miles). Most of the sea has a shallow depth of only 90 meters - around 300 feet.

There are numerous islands and archipelagos in the North Sea, like the Shetland islands, Orkney, and the Frisian Islands.

Aegean Sea Map

The Agean Sea is a subdivision of the Mediterranean Sea, specifically an embayment that extends northward between Greece and Turkey. The Aegean Sea connects to the Sea of Marmara by way of the Dardanelles and the Black Sea by way of the Bosporus Strait. The Aegean Islands are located within the Aegean Sea, including the major islands on its southern periphery, including Rhodes and Crete.

The area of the Aegean Sea covers 214,000 square km - or 83,000 square miles. It is approximately 610 km long from north to south (380 miles), and about 300 km (or 190 miles) from east to west.

Baltic Sea Map

The Baltic Sea is situated in Northern Europe, bordering the Scandinavian Peninsula, the European mainland, and the islands of Denmark. Around 85 million people live within the vicinity of the Baltic Sea, specifically in its drainage basic. And 15 million people live within 10 km of its coast.

Because of its location in a cold climate, much of the Baltic Sea freezes. On average, each year 45% of the sea`s surface area will be covered by ice. The ice can be as thick as 70 cm (or 28 inches). This makes marine travel very reliant on the use of icebreaker ships. This icy habitat is home to the grey seal and the Baltic ringed seal, which feed underneath the ice and breed on top of the ice. I would love to see these animals in their natural habitat, out there on the ice!

Black Sea Map

The Black Sea is a body of water surrounding by land in Europe, Anatolia, and the Caucasus regions. Even though it is an inland sea, it does have a connection to the Mediterranean Sea and Aegean Sea through some straits. Another strait connects it to the Sea of Azov. That strait is called the Strait of Kerch. The countries that border the sea are Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Georgia, Russia, and Ukraine. There is also the breakaway state of Abkhazia, which considers itself independent but most of the world considers part of Georgia.

Because of the Black Sea`s important location, right between a number of strategically, economically, and politically important areas, it was an important crossroads in ancient times. Archaeological evidence shows very early settlement and trade in the area. For example, the oldest processed gold in the world was found in the area.

The surface area of the Black Sea is 436,000 square km, or 168,500 square miles.

The Mediterranean Sea is a a sea lying between North Africa to the south, and Europe to the north. Its eastern shores also border Western Asia (also known as the Middle East). It is often technically considered to be part of the Atlantic Ocean, but most people think of it in practical terms as a separate entity.

The Mediterranean has a surface area of approximately 2,500,000 square km - ot 970,000 square miles.

The climate of the region is typically hot dry summers, and mild rainy winters, without much of a distinct autumn or spring.

There are 21 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, including Turkey, Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Malta, Italy, Monaco, France, Spain, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco. The Gaza Strip also borders the sea but is not fully sovereign. Some territories also border it, specifically Gibraltar (UK), Ceuta and Melilla (Spain), and Akrotiri and Dhekelia (UK).

The Munich Metro system consists of two systems, the U Bahn and the S Bahn. The U Bahn stands for Untergrundbahn, meaning "subway" in German. The two networks are interconnected in real terms, though technically separate systems.

Hamburg Map Germany

Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany, after Berlin. It is, however, not the second largest metropolitan area in Germany. That honor goes to Frankfurt. In any case, the population of Hamburg is more than 1.8 million people. And the metro area has around 4.3 million, slighlty less than Frankfurt`s.

The city is a port city situated on a peninsula, with the North Sea to the west and the Baltic Sea to the east. The city exists the spot where the Rver Elbe, and the Alster and Bille, come together.

The city experiences an Oceanic climate, with mild weather and rare snowfall. In summer the high temperatures are in the lower 20 degrees centigrade, with in the winter the high temperatures hover in the range of 4 degrees centigrade. It is one of the wealthiest cities on the European continent, and is routinely rated among the most liveable cities in the world.

Berlin Wall Map

At the end of World War II Berlin, the capital of Germany, was divided into four occupation zones, just as the entire country of Germany was. The Western countries` occupation zones (American, French, and British) were separated from the Russian occupation zone (East Berlin) by the Berlin Wall. The wall also encircled the Western section of the city to separate it from East Germany, making West Berlin a Western enclave inside East Germany. This meant that at times the only access to West Berlin was via the air.

The Berlin Wall was torn down in 1989 as the result of a non-violent revolution. Berlin and all of Germany were soon reunited afterwards.

The Berlin U-Bahn is the name of the subway metro system in Germany`s capital city Berlin. The "U" in U-Bahn comes from the word "Underground" which is typically how subways are referred to in Europe. The U-Bahn Berlin Metro began in 1902, and has grown to its present size with 173 stations located on 10 subway lines. Just look at the Berlin U Bahn map, it`s gigantic. Most of the system is found underground.

The U-Bahn is a perfect example of German efficiency in action, with trains every 2 to 5 minutes during the peak rush hours, and every 5 minutes even during the non-peak hours of the daytime, and every 10 minutes at night. Frankfurt airport is a gigantic international airport located in Frankfurt, Germany. It is the busiest airport in Germany, the third busiest in Europe after London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. It is the ninth busiest airport in the world. Frankfurt city is not the largest city in Germany, it is in fact only the fifth largest city. But the airport has carved out a niche as an international transit hub, with countless international passengers transiting through Frankfurt. I myself have been to Frankfurt airport numerous times though I have never been to Frankfurt city. The airport serves 298 destinations in 110 countries, and carried 53 million passengers in 2010.

Despite the fact that Frankfurt city is not a massive city, the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main metropolitan region is the second largest in the country. And its central location in a densely populated megalopolis (basically an ongoing belt of cities and towns that blend into each other for a very long distance) means that numerous other metropolitan areas are within driving distance. Cologne, for example, is around 2 hours away by car, as are the Ruhr Area and Stuttgart.
